BMI calculator
Enter your height and weight and see your body mass index, your category and a healthy weight range for your height.
BMI does not measure body fat or muscle. Athletes, older adults and some ethnic groups can fall outside what the ranges predict.
What your BMI means
- Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or higher is obesity (adults).
- BMI is a screen. Muscle, age and body shape change what a number means for you.
- If your result is outside the healthy range, a doctor can check waist size, blood pressure and blood sugar for the full picture.

Questions
What is BMI?
Body mass index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. It is a quick screen for weight categories in adults.
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the CDC lists 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy weight range, below 18.5 as underweight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or higher as obesity.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not separate fat from muscle and does not show where fat is stored, so a clinician looks at more than BMI.
Does this work for children?
No. Children and teens use BMI-for-age percentiles. Ask a pediatrician.
