Body adiposity index (BAI) calculator
Estimate your body fat percentage from hip size and height, and see the healthy range for your age and sex.
BAI is a rough estimate from hip size and height. A DEXA scan or a clinician measurement is more accurate.
How to read your result
- The big number is an estimate of body fat percentage, not a measurement.
- The healthy range comes from published ranges by age and sex, for ages 20 to 79.
- Use it to track your own trend over months with the same measuring method.

Questions
What is the body adiposity index?
BAI estimates body fat percentage from hip circumference and height, so it needs no scale. It was proposed in 2011 as an alternative to BMI.
How accurate is BAI?
It is a rough estimate, and later research has questioned how well it works. A DEXA scan or a clinician measurement is more accurate.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
It depends on age and sex. For women aged 20 to 39 the healthy range is about 21% to 33%, and for men of that age about 8% to 21%.
Where do I measure my hips?
Stand relaxed and wrap a tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping it level.
